As part of a drawing unit, fifth grade artists selected an item to try drawing realistically using observational drawing techniques. Artists focused on line, form, and value while creating their artwork.
Abstract Color Studies
After studying abstract expressionist artwork by Paul Klee, Sonia Delaunay, and Arthur Dove, fifth grade artists created their own abstract paintings. Artists began by making thumbnail sketches and selecting a color scheme - monochromatic, analogous, or complementary. Additionally, artists practiced mixing tints, shades, and tones using black and white paint while creating their work.
Fifth grade artists used objects to form letters while creating personalized Name Illustration drawings. Artists were encouraged to use items that expressed their unique personalities and interests so that their finished work may serve as a nontraditional self-portrait.
